Build a country coverage map with Atlasmere
A coverage map can explain which countries a program includes and give each place a short description. Atlasmere is a local geographic map studio: it pairs country polygons with editable details, WGS84 coordinate markers and portable outputs.
We will make Practice coverage — Portugal and Spain, with two highlighted countries and one Demo workshop marker at latitude 40, longitude −4. These are fictional editorial examples. The marker is an illustrative point, not a verified venue, office or address. The map does not establish actual business coverage.
Start with the appropriate package
The free fixed coverage preview lets you explore the supplied map. Its five-file free preview ZIP includes the same filled viewer, sample JSON and notices under the preview terms. It contains no configurable editor or GeoJSON importer.
The authoring package is $19.00 USD, one-time. Applicable taxes calculated at checkout. The paid customer package includes the local editor, JSON save/open, GeoJSON import, standalone HTML, iframe and static SVG exports, samples and documentation. The editing steps below use that package. There is no required account, geocoding API, tile provider or location permission.
Extract the customer ZIP with its folders intact and open app/index.html. If your browser restricts local files, use the loopback-server option in the installation guide. Browser draft storage is convenient, but a downloaded JSON file is the portable backup.
Clear the sample deliberately
- Choose Save project before replacing custom work. Load coverage example restores the supplied Aster routes sample; confirm replacement only after keeping the backup you need.
- Use Find a region to select United States of America, France, Australia and Japan in turn. Clear Highlight this region and choose Apply place changes for each. Clearing a highlight does not remove the underlying country.
- On the map, select the fictional New York studio marker and choose Delete marker. Repeat for the Tokyo marker. Undo can restore an accidental deletion.
- Set Map title to “Practice coverage — Portugal and Spain,” Introduction to “Fictional planning exercise. No real service area or venue,” and Map focus to Europe. Choose Apply map settings.
The finished exercise should have two highlighted countries and one marker. The other countries remain as context. A map focus changes the displayed geographic bounds; it does not delete regions or change saved marker coordinates.
Add country details and one coordinate marker
Search for Portugal, select its region button, set Title to “Portugal practice coverage,” Description to “Fictional workshop planning region; no actual program offered,” and Color to #247d70. Clear the sample destination link, enable Highlight this region, then choose Apply place changes. Repeat for Spain with Title “Spain practice coverage” and Color #a75f41.
Type “Demo workshop” in New marker name, 40 in New latitude and −4 in New longitude, then choose Add marker. In Place details, add “Illustrative point only; not a real venue,” leave Destination link blank and choose Apply place changes. Keep the default marker size for this exercise.
Apply before changing selection or saving. Text pending in the place form is not part of the project until applied. Destination links, when supplied, must be absolute HTTP or HTTPS URLs. Use a real destination you control in your own project; the exercise intentionally has none.
Latitude ranges from −90 to 90; longitude ranges from −180 to 180. The editor labels them separately. GeoJSON coordinates use the opposite written order: [longitude, latitude], so this marker's pair is [-4, 40]. Atlasmere does not look up an address or verify a coordinate's real-world meaning. Place marker also lets you click the map, but check the saved coordinates afterward.
Test the viewer and keep the editable backup
Choose Preview and select each highlighted country or marker to check its details. The editor supports clicking a shape or focusing it and pressing Enter or Space. The exported HTML also supplies country/region and venue/marker selectors, useful when a small region or nearby marker is difficult to target.
Choose Save project, then Open project and select the downloaded JSON. Confirm both country descriptions, the marker's latitude 40 and longitude −4, and the Europe focus. JSON retains the geographic data, region settings and marker details. Keep a separate copy before importing a new geography; do not rely on a browser draft as your only copy.
| Output | Use it for | Check before sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Export HTML | A self-contained interactive viewer with geometry and editorial data. | Open the downloaded file. Use both selectors, inspect descriptions and try it at wide and narrow sizes. It is a viewer, not the editing studio. |
| Copy iframe embed | Embedding that viewer in a page using self-contained srcdoc. | Paste into a site that accepts the code, adjust iframe height, and check each embedded map independently. |
| Export static SVG | Vector artwork for a document or layout. | Open the SVG in your target application. Interactive detail panels and destination navigation belong to HTML, not this static output. |
Exports contain the map data and any descriptions or links you entered, so share them intentionally. A CMS may strip iframe attributes or reject large inline content. Test the actual destination page and follow its security policy; do not weaken it just to accept an embed. The iframe uses a sandbox and does not require same-origin access.
Use custom GeoJSON when country outlines are insufficient
The bundled Natural Earth 110m geography contains 177 country features and uses an equirectangular map. It is illustrative: tiny territories may be absent, and names or boundaries can be disputed or unsuitable for your purpose. It is not a legal, cadastral, routing or navigation reference. It does not promise every municipality, state or territory.
For your own areas, obtain data you have rights to use and export WGS84 longitude/latitude GeoJSON. Atlasmere accepts a FeatureCollection of Polygon or MultiPolygon features, including interior holes. Give each feature a stable unique ID and a properties.name; continent is optional. Point and LineString collections and projected coordinates are rejected.
This deliberately fictional rectangle is a small format exercise, not a service boundary or geographic dataset. Save it as practice-area.geojson, back up your country project, then choose Import GeoJSON:
{

Import replaces the geography and editorial data; it does not merge layers. The practice area opens as a new project with no markers. The original country project can be recovered by opening its saved JSON. Invalid geometry should leave the valid project intact; keep your backup when experimenting.
The importer limits projects/imports to 12 MB, 500 features, 100,000 vertices total and 20,000 vertices per ring, with additional polygon/ring limits documented in the README. Rings must close and have nonzero area; numbers must be finite and within coordinate bounds. Large or unsuitable data needs preparation before import. A region crossing the antimeridian may still produce a broad focus because focus uses full bounds.
Preserve rights and separate hosted diagnostics
The purchaser terms allow use in your own personal and commercial projects and sharing finished outputs; standalone resale or redistribution of the editor/source package is excluded. Preserve the separate Natural Earth notices and the rights of any custom data. Documentation is included; an SLA, update schedule or guaranteed business result is not.
Downloaded files contain no measurement adapter. The hosted product and fixed preview use anonymous diagnostic counts that respect Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control and exclude map content, coordinates, filenames and destination URLs. Those counts do not establish people, coverage, payment or sales. Compare the fixed preview and editable package on the Atlasmere product page.
